Social Bowls Winners’ Circle
Wednesday 13 Nov
Another great day of bowls on Wednesday although the weather did cut down the number of ends we played. Winners, decided by Lucky Rinks, were Peter James, Garry Burke and Mitch Mitchell (skip) who teed off early to lead 9 to 1 after 7 ends and kept the momentum going for a 17 to 8 win against Ken Burrows, Bob Murphy and Peter Murton (skip). Second place went to Ian Johannsen, Dennis Maggs and John Spees (skip) who were in fine form to lead throughout for an 18 to 4 win against Scott Kennedy, Tony Cobcroft and Peter Pickett (skip). Thank you to Rapley & Son’s Butchery for their continued support.
Saturday 16 Nov
we had another good turnout and winners, decided by Lucky Rinks, were Billy Wilton and Carl Lee (skip) who trailed for the first half of the game where they were down 5 to 9 after 12 ends before they got their eye in to take the lead 11 to 9 after 14 ends and then held their ground from there on to win their match 18 to 15 against Paul Naylor and Craig Campbell (skip).
Sunday 17 Nov
we had 2 rinks of triples and 2 rinks of pairs and the winners, decided by Highest Winning Score, were Carol Harraway and Russell Smith (skip) who were on song early on to lead 15 to 4 after 10 ends and they continued to be all over the jack on their way to a 22 to 8 win against Pieter Vos and Ken Burrows (skip). Second place went to Ross Richardson, Clare Cork and Terry Lewis (skip) who were behind earl on before they squared the game at 8 all after 9 ends and then drew clear for a 16 to 8 win against Sue Wales, Kaye Whiffen and Darrel Goodridge (skip). We welcomed two new bowlers on Sunday, Ross Richardson and Rod Walker, it was great to have you join us and we look forward to you enjoying many years of good times on the greens.
Major Singles Championship
There was one, semi-final, game played this week with Greg Ryan playing Rob Coulson. Greg bounced out to lead 8 to 4 after 6 ends before Rob picked up a shot on each of the next 5 ends to take the lead 9 to 8 after 11 ends. The standard of bowls was very high with great draw shots and weighted shots being executed by both bowlers. Over the next 9 ends the lead changed on 5 occasions, the margin didn’t get above 2 shots and after 20 ends Greg led 16 to 15. Over the next 10 ends the story was the same, the scores were level on 4 occasions and first Greg would take the lead then Rob would take it and after 30 ends the score was 21 all. Tight heads remained the norm but over the next 3 ends Rob was able to gain the shot and after 33 ends Rob won this wonderful match 25 to 21.
Congratulations to Rob Coulson and Les Waldock who will now play the final on this Friday, 22 November, at 10.00am. Do yourself a favour and get down to watch this match, it should be a ripper.
Major Fours Championship
One first round match was played this week. John Rowley, Barry Goodwin, Rob Coulson and Peter Murton (skip) played John Voytas, Cindy Newell, Ian Smart and John McNamara (skip). John McNamara’s team started well to lead early and after getting out to an 8 to 1 lead after 4 ends the margin was reduced to 1 shot, 9 to 8 after 8 ends. John and his team put on a burst to take 4 of the next 5 ends to lead 15 to 9 only to have Peter Murton’s team strike back again to reduce the lead to 1 shot, again, 15 to 14 after 17 ends. John and his team won 2 of the following 3 ends and after 20 ends they led 19 to 16. The final end was very tense as Peter’s team tried to make up the leeway, but John and his team prevailed to pick up 1 shot to take the match 20 to 16.
